CatholicFIT: Family Fitness Workshop - At home stretches and kettlebell dead liftsThe second CatholicFIT building block is Family & Community. God instilled in our DNA the human need for connection and relationship. This is crazy important during challenging times.

  • Want to enjoy and succeed in sports? Surround yourself with a good team who works together.
  • Want to lose weight? Find supportive, positive people you can lean on, talk to and will hold you accountable.
  • Want to live your faith and serve God? Join one of the many clubs and ministry opportunities at your church.
  • Want to get fit? Find a motivating group exercise class to share the experience with.

As you know, all of these things can be pretty darned tough to tackle alone. As this week’s catechism excerpt states below, the family is where this ability to recognize and surround yourself with good people begins:

Catholic Catechism #2207 The family is the community in which, from childhood, one can learn moral values, begin to honor God, and make good use of freedom. Family life is an initiation into life in society. #2208 The family should live in such a way that its members learn to care and take responsibility for the young, the old, the sick, the handicapped, and the poor.

This excerpt implies a few great questions for us as parents. Are we raising our children with strong moral values, how to honor God and confidently spring board into society? Are we creating a culture in our home that teaches our kids to care for the old, the sick, the handicapped and the poor?

One final question for you – I believe this all speaks to the flip side of surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people during challenging times, and that is this question to ask yourself: Am I a person others want to be around when they are shooting for a goal?

Eat with Intention – Nutrition Goals for the Week

  1. Healthy habits begin in the home, specifically as a family, as a part of your family culture. Eating together as a family several times per week is a key foundational principle for healthy bodies and healthy relationships. Here are your week two goals:
  2. Eat together as a family several times this week.
If possible, invite a friend, family member or clergy over for dinner and tell them about the program.

Move with Intention – Strength & Stretch of the Week

CatholicFIT Squat and Sit to Stand Variations

Families who squat together stay together!

We focus on strength and flexibility because as we age, we continually lose both. Restoring and maintaining lean body mass (in other words, strength) and flexibility should be our top priorities when exercising.

A focus of this program is to teach our children how to maintain their natural flexibility and safely build their natural strength. Particularly when mobility is lost and strength becomes too one dimensional (as when a young athlete plays only one sport year round) – aches, pains and chances for injury increase.

Many doctors and therapists are now saying that over 90% of all orthopedic injuries are preventable with proper body awareness, strength and mobility training. Check out this week’s exercises below to continue building a strong, durable body.
