Up to this point, we have focused on our personal health: our food, sleep, hydration and movement. Now we step outside of ourselves to focus on those around us, our FAMILY & COMMUNITY. I am who I surround myself with. It is difficult to find a better solution to the challenges we face in today’s secular society than from these lessons pulled directly from the Catechism:
“The family should teach us to care for the young, old, sick, the handicapped, and poor.” (#2208)
“The family is where children lean moral values and begin to honor God.” (#2207)
These words from the Catechism are beautifully stated; so simple, yet so powerful. This week is all about surrounding yourself with good people who will support and challenge you in any situation, AND being someone others choose to be around for support and encouragement too. As teachers, parents, leaders, and mentors, we dedicate our lives to raising healthy, strong, productive, useful human beings who will thrive as faithful and fit adults, able to express the same support and love they received from their family in support and love of others.
Activity Review & Learning Objectives
After this week, students should be able to:
- understand importance of performing strong planks for core and posture muscle strength
- understand modifications for push ups appropriate for their level of strength
- discuss ways they can support friends and family with completing tasks like homework or achieving other goals
- understand the importance of family (and our Church supernatural family) for becoming a good person and Christian
Reflection Questions
- Who is supporting your decision to get to Mass every Sunday? Who are you supporting to do the same?
- Who is challenging you to be mindful of your food, or go for a walk on the weekends?
- Are you supporting others with their health and fitness lifestyle? Are you practicing what you preach and leading by example?
- Do you play for a sports team? How do you support and challenge your teammates?
- Who helps you be the best version of yourself? Who are you helping be the best version of themselves?

Get Ready for the Next Principle
Next time we will practice reaching overhead and pulling strength (pull ups and pull up bar hangs) as we discuss the principle of SELF CONTROL. Self Control is not just about restricting ourselves, but living a Christ-centered life focused on our Christian faith and intentional fitness practices. Self-control is often called “discipline”, and is also one of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit.
