Um, yes, we sort of took a few minutes for some 1-on-1 basketball on our wedding day. Those who hoop together stay together.
As we teach, learn and coach health and fitness through the prism of Catholicism, we continually realize how powerful this can be for all contexts of our lives. We are all looking for ways to strengthen our social relationships, particularly with our spouse.
I tell clients all the time, that I had this health and fitness stuff figured out when I was single, but had to re-learn and redefine it upon getting married and sharing my kitchen with Tara. As soon as we developed strength in that part of our relationship, we had three kids in five years, and started all over with it.
I believe all Marriage Encounter programs should incorporate strong financial and fitness components. There are few things I have a hard time hearing more than a wife coming in telling me she is note receiving support from her husband during her health and weight loss journey. Come on guys – we can do better! It is our obligation to do better.
Articles about developing strength, support and more communication at home with your loved one are coming soon.
For now, Catholic.org is an excellent site for learning so much about the Catholic faith, specifically prayers for many topics. (I plan to write more for athletic performance, health and fitness.) For now though, here is a prayer for healing a spousal relationship:
Prayer to Heal a Relationship
Dear Lord,
I offer you this prayer, to help me with my current relationship situation. Please take away all the pain and hurt in my heart. Fill it with love, joy, patience, and understanding. Bless me and my partner, so that we may never surrender to whatever challenges that come our way. Fill our hearts with love for each other, and may you make each one of us realize each other’s worth. Please touch the heart of my partner, fill it with much love for me. Make our complicated relationship become uncomplicated. I seek for your mercy and blessing that you may allow us to spend the rest of our lives with each other. Please make this feeling mutual for both of us. Lead us not into temptations. Guide us wherever we go. Always put us in each other’s heart and mind. Thank you Lord for hearing my prayer. I love you. Amen. The link to the original page is here: Prayer to Heal a Relationship on Catholic.org.
